Assessment of Literature in St. Marg's

For Sec 2's, assessment is a mix of formative and summative. For instance, we had a series of debates prior to the March holidays. Students were expected to fill in Peer Assessment Forms where they assessed their peer's performance and showed what they understood from the debates. There are projects that are a mix of formative and summative. For example, the Authentic Transfer Task where students were expected to demonstrate on understanding of the text (Much Ado) via costume design, music choice + write-up etc.

For Sec 3's and 4's, the focus is on exam preparation so assessment is mostly summative. So far, from what I've observed, students submit an essay every term. There are no other forms of assessment, apart from the major exams, outside of that.

  1. " Students were expected to fill in Peer Assessment Forms where they assessed their peer's performance and showed what they understood from the debates." - do you think such student evaluation is accurate?

    1. Accurate in what sense? Whether it truly reflects their understanding of the debate? To some degree, yes. It ensured that they were paying attention and jotting down points. It also depends on how seriously students took this form of assessment. At first students thought it was just for fun until I ensured them that I was going to read through their responses. This assessment didn't count towards their final but while marking it, I realized it at least forced students to pay attention and take note of what was happening in class so there was no chance to switch off.

Whether it reflected true understanding of what was happening in the play, probably to a lesser degree since not many students will be able to synthesize information that quickly to form new conclusions.
