Poetry Teacher

URL: http://www.poetryteachers.com/

It can be quite difficult for teachers to teach poetry these days as poetry can be a daunting component to students. This website contains a guide for teachers to teach poetry and it also has a lot of interesting activities which we can adapt. One thing good about this website is that the activities are simple to carry out in our local schools. I particularly like the Poetry Theatre section, whereby teachers can get their students to put up a short drama based on poems. I feel that this is a good method to engage the students as it introduces poetry to students through interesting ways. Through drama, students will be able to better understand the feelings and emotions that are being conveyed in the poems. They will also be able to understand how the sound elements work together to create a certain mood.

Another plus point for this website is that there is a link that brings us to the fictionteachers.com (http://www.fictionteachers.com/). In this websites, there are sample lesson plans for some of the fictions and we can draw on these resources to help us better plan our lessons.

  1. I think this website contains many fun and humourous ideas/activities that will be useful as a starting point to introduce students to poetry and get them interested in it; however, the ideas might be less relevant to the upper sec lit syllabus. Perhaps teachers can adapt the 'fun' aspects of various ideas to teach specific devises, for example using fill-in-the-blank poems to teach rhyme/meter.
